Quick update on MWG

Hey everyone,

As many of you have noticed, there has not been any posts in awhile. Phil's Mafia Wars and paypal accounts were hacked. Someone traded off all his MW loot and racked up a bunch of charges on his paypal account. Since he didn't feel like starting over, he decided to throw in the towel on MW, at least to the best of my knowledge (feel free to chime in Phil if you happen to see this).

If anyone wants to take up the mantle, feel free to drop me an e-mail at mafiawarsguide _a t_ gmail dot com (naturally, replace the __a t__ and dot with an appropriate symbol). I offer a revenue share of advertising revenue, though it would not be much (75-100 a month-ish) with potential for more if you are able to restore the blog to its formal glory ;p.

Mafia Wars Meetup Day Event is April 8th

Take Back the Street Mission Walkthrough

Here is the newest mission from Mafia Wars.  Once again, it is 6 parts and does require some time or some reward points.  It is a timed mission, so make sure you check the timer and get it done in time as there are some pretty good rewards!  Keep in mind that your experience earned from each is different due to your level.

Mini Energy Packs

So, I just noticed this new "Mini Energy Pack" feature. I personally am a fan of this. Before I could get 2 extra levels a day through energy packs (only 1 extra level in Brazil because of energy:experience ratio). But with 6 , you should be able to get up to 6 extra levels a day, which will make clearing Brazil much easier, but apparently this is only for a "limited time" so I would take advantage of this now and clear Brazil quickly.

Sunk cost fallacy: Economics claims FarmVille isn't fun

According to a blogger at YouAreNotSoSmart.com, FarmVille's mindblowing success has absolutely nothing to do with the game actually being fun. Zynga's farming titan owes all of its success to a little economic theory called Sunk Cost.

Sunk cost is based on the idea that people have stronger emotional ties to things they have lost (including intangible things such as time) than they do to things they have gained. It also claims that the psychological drive to get back things that you have lost will cause you to do some pretty wacky things. Such as pay for a virtual currency named Farm Cash. Or beg your friends to help your revive your crops.

FarmVille uses the ideas of loss aversion and sunk cost to drive many of its features. The game encourages players to plant a large farm full of seeds that take time to grow, start building structures, and plant some trees, and then sends you away to enjoy your life (or another game). It's the fact that you know your crops will wither, that your trees will be blossoming and ready for harvest, that your structures are waiting to be completed, that makes you want to come back. You don't want to lose out on your time investment (even though you can't get that time back). And of course, you can pay your precious real life cash to prevent bad things from happening to your crops.
Farmville players are mired in a pit of sunk costs. They can never get back the time or the money they've spent, but they keep playing to avoid feeling the pain of loss and the ugly sensation waste creates. Of course, this isn't the first time we've heard someone trying to completely dismiss our love of the game as a psychological addiction. However, what this article fails to recognize is that the game can still be fun despite a known economic theory driving much of the original game's design. I don't personally play FarmVille because I want to tend my cows and my crops and prevent losses or get back time that I've already spent. I play it because I like to decorate my farm. I like the collection aspect of the game. And other players enjoy FarmVille for completely different reasons.

Sunk cost may explain why FarmVille grew so fast, or why it continues to be a prime money maker in the social games space. But in my humble opinion, blanket statements such as "FarmVille isn't fun based on X fact or Y fact" are completely unjustified. Millions and millions of players enjoy FarmVille for a variety of reasons. Not every gamer is the same. I certainly don't feel like the game is exploiting my psychology, I just like making stupid decorations out of damn haybales.

FarmVille LE English Countryside Animals: Suffolk Horse, Devon Pig, Orange Ewe and more

Five new animals have officially launched in FarmVille this evening as part of the limited edition English Countryside theme. We brought you a sneak peek of two of these animals just this evening, proving our prediction that they would be launching "soon." They are the Suffolk Horse and the Suffolk Foal. Of course, you'll be able to purchase the Suffolk Horse from the store for 26 Farm Cash, while the foal can then be bred from a Suffolk Horse in the Horse Stable.

The Suffolk Horse can be purchased for either your Home Farm or your second farm in the English Countryside, as can the Devon Pig, which is available to purchase for 16 Farm Cash. Two other animals, the Orange and Yellow Ewes, are exclusive to the English Countryside, as they can be used for breeding. Both are available for 20 Farm Cash each.

The Suffolk Horse and Devon Pig will be in the store for the next two weeks, while the Orange and Yellow Ewes will be available to purchase for the next three weeks. Make sure to purchase them sooner, rather than later, if you'd like to start breeding Lambs in those two color families while you still can.

Check out the rest of our English Countryside coverage right here.

Will you purchase either the Suffolk Horse or the Devon Pig? How about adding one of these two Ewes to your Sheep Pen? Let us know in the comments.

CityVille Higher Education Goals: Everything you need to know

According to Zynga, it's time to get edumacated in CityVille. Well, through a new set of "Higher Education" Goals, that is. Rolling in the new High Education theme, these seven--count 'em!--Goals will guide you along in acquiring some of this new content. Now, let's find out from this early information just how you're going to keep on the books.

FarmVille feedback survey asks, 'Would you recommend me?'

We know you hate the Pause feature, but put the pitchforks down for a second--this news could help your farm down the line. According to FarmVille Freak, several FarmVille farmers have reported a link to a feedback survey located beneath the game screen. This is no sponsored link, folks. Clicking on the link will bring players to a separate web page containing a survey of seven questions. Among feedback on the English Countryside expansion, the most notable query is simple: "How likely are you to recommend FarmVille?"

The next, large question features several considerations that many players complain are what drove them away like "efficiency" and "technical issues." It looks like Zynga is trying to restore their former glory through--wait for it--changing the game itself. Check out the survey in full right here; this could change the game for the better later down the line.

Have you seen or taken the survey already? What change or upgrade to FarmVille would make you most likely recommend the game to someone? Sound off in the comments. Add Comment.

Quote of the Moment: 'Metrics ... help us make [social] games better'

he numbers give us an idea of roughly what kind of feature to do because there are some kinds of features that are more likely to drive people to pay or to drive people to stick and come back a lot or to invite their friends or things like that. So you can kind of aim a feature at different things or different combinations of things, but then you still have to have someone to be creative to make it cool and to make it fun and to make it fit into a long term story that makes sense to people. So I think that the metrics are something that help us make the games better. Zynga chief creative officer Brian Reynolds of FrontierVille fame said this to IndustryGamers in a recent interview. Essentially, this is Reynolds' defense against critics of the metrics-driven game design system. Many, most notably indie game designer Jon Blow, consider this approach to game design exploitative and devoid of fun and creativity. According to Reynolds' words, working within the constraints of metrics actually focus designers into making social games better based on feedback. We're no game designers, so we'll take your word for it, Brian.

CityVille Police Station Upgrades 5 and 6: Everything you need to know

While higher education doesn't normally lead to higher crime rates, that's exactly what it did in CityVille, oddly enough. Levels 5 and 6 of the Police Station released recently, which resulted in four new Bandits breaking out into the streets. Thankfully, you have a new Police Cruiser and Helicopter to combat them. Here's how to do it.

Earn 2 free FarmVille Farm Cash in Dr. Drew promotion

With everything you left behind on your way to the English Countryside, it might be a good idea to take advantage of every free Farm Cash opportunity you can. Zynga has released yet another FarmVille Sponsored Link, and this time Dr. Drew is here to dole out the dough. Once the link becomes available, find it beneath the game screen--it has a Dr. Drew logo on it. The star of Celebrity Rehab and Sober House has some questions about your own potential addiction.

Clicking on the link will take players to a pop-up survey, surrounded by the wooden-looking border (to remind you that it's official). Just answer Dr. Drew's nagging questions and one you're through the familiar "You've earned your Farm Cash" message should appear in the upper right. Click on the blue X to close the window correctly and your Farm Cash should post to your account within an hour. Now, you're 2 Farm Cash richer and one step closer to getting over your FarmVille addiction. One tiny step.

Poll: Would you ever remove a FarmVille, Facebook game friend?

FrontierVille forum contributor Purselamplady (how do folks come up with these names?) suffers a dilemma. One of her high-level friends, for all intents and purposes, is a load. For all of her request she responds to and Lunches she sends, this gal sends nothing, nor does she help at any point. She just reaps the benefits, as if she needs them more than anyone else. In other words, she's not the type of friend that ... works in FrontierVille. So, to leave or not to leave, that is the question:

Would you ever remove a neighbor?survey software

Sony Online Entertainment closes three studios; social games suffer? [Updated]

(Update: SOE has provides an official response on the closure's effects on social games. Find the statement after the break.)

Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) has made an upsetting move today, closing its Denver, Seattle and Tuscon studios while laying off a total of 205 employees, Joystiq reports. While SOE has yet to make official confirmation, its social games could take a hit as both SOE Denver and Tucson worked on Facebook games. Sony's "strategic decision to reduce costs and streamline its global workforce" will result in the cancellation of development on The Agency, its awaited spy-combat MMO that SOE Seattle was working on.

The move was also made in favor of focusing development strength on the company's upcoming Planetside and Everquest MMOs. Unfortunately, the only studio left to create Facebook games is SOE headquarters in San Diego, Calif, which just released Catch A Killer on Facebook. Our best wishes go out to all those affected by the closures. SOE's full statement is after the break.

Here's the official statement from SOE provided to Joystiq:
As part of a strategic decision to reduce costs and streamline its global workforce, SOE announced today that it will eliminate 205 positions and close its Denver, Seattle and Tucson studios. As part of this restructuring, SOE is discontinuing production of The Agency so it can focus development resources on delivering two new MMOs based on its renowned PlanetSide and EverQuest properties, while also maintaining its current portfolio of online games. All possible steps are being taken to ensure team members affected by the transition are treated with appropriate concern.

This strategic decision will have no impact on SOE's current portfolio of live games; additionally SOE will transition development efforts for the Denver and Tucson studios' suite of products to its San Diego headquarters. This strategic alignment of development resources better positions SOE to remain a global leader in online gaming and deliver on its promise of creating entertaining games for players of all ages, and servicing the 20 million players that visited SOE servers in just the past year. SOE Seattle also developed and released a Facebook companion game for the The Agency called The Agency: Covert Ops. As for SOE Tucson, some of its team created PoxNora for Facebook last year. While it's yet to be confirmed, these projects could very well be shuttered right along with The Agency. We've contacted SOE for comment.

Official comment from SOE regarding its effect on social games:
Our free-to-play, casual games and all other live titles will continue on being supported. This strategic decision will have no impact on SOE's current portfolio of games and will better position SOE to deliver on its promise of developing entertaining games for players of all ages and remaining a global leader in online gaming.
What do you think of SOE's decision to close three studios that created social games? What does this spell for the future of SOE in the social games space? Sound off in the comments. Add Comment.

Cafe World Supreme Cuisine Event: Choose a side, cook its delicacies

Comments by Joe Osborne, Posted Mar 31st 2011 4:55PM Tweet
A major event, Zynga's "Iron Chef," if you will, is about to begin in Cafe World. It's called Supreme Cuisine, and it will pit diametrically opposed, cultural culinary traditions against one another in a massive cook-off. The event will be organized into an elimination round-style tournament with the winner crowned the world's Supreme Cuisine. According to the video, players will have to choose between either Hearty Italian chef Piero and Classic French chef Raquel (you can even follow their progress on Twitter) in the first round of this competition. As players cook limited edition recipes from the culinary school of their choosing, they can earn new recipes and collectible trophies. It's unknown exactly when this event will release, though I can bet that it will be a slow roll-out. We're done fueling the hype, so let the above video do the rest.

Have you seen this feature appear in your Cafe World yet? Which side would you choose in the first round? Sound off in the comments. Add Comment.

EA fields MLB Facebook game, World Series Superstars

Admittedly, you could have seen this one coming from a mile away. EA has launched its fourth sports game on Facebook, World Series Superstars, a pro baseball social game, Gamasutra reports. And according to CNBC, it's the company's first baseball game in six years thanks to Take Two Interactive owning the rights to MLB-based games since 2005. However, that agreement did not cover Facebook games, and how could it have? The genre has only been around for three years at most. Very sneaky, EA.

Regardless, the game was developed by the company's social gaming arm, Playfish, as was Madden NFL Superstars and FIFA Superstars before it, which are home to 1.5 million and 3.5 million monthly players respectively, according to Gamasutra. World Series Superstars allows players to create their own dream team and compete in a single-player league as well as with their Facebook friends. Through successful games, players can increase their team's strengths and deck out their stadiums. And considering everyone is just about back from Clearwater at this point, EA could not have better timing.

Have you tried World Series Superstars on Facebook yet? How do you think this game will fare compared to previous sports games on Facebook? Sound off in the comments. Add Comment.

FrontierVille April Missions: Everything you need to know

To celebrate the beginning of April tomorrow, Zynga has launched a five-part mission series in FrontierVille called simply the "April Missions." Each mission has something to do with a task normally undertaken during the month in the real world, such as April Fools' Day, tax season, and so on.

To start, the first missions of five is called "April Fools," and it asks you to collect a single item from the new April Fools collection, along with completing two other tasks.

Have 500 Wood
Collect one Snake in a Can
Tend 30 Neighbors' Oxen

To collect this Snake in a Can, all you'll need to do is complete tasks around your Homestead, as they will drop at random throughout the entire month of April (and presumably the rest of this evening as well). Your rewards for completing this first mission aren't a joke - 500 XP and 1 Tool Box, which contains a handful of valuable building items for use on your Homestead.

FrontierVille April Fools Collection available for one month only

Just like the St. Patrick's Day collection in FrontierVille, which contains collectible items that can be found by completing all manner of tasks on your Homestead, from feeding animals to harvesting crops and trees, a new collection has launched that will celebrate the month of April. This new collection is called the April Fools Collection, and it asks you collect five "prank" items around your land.

Snake in a Can
Fake Vomit
Finger Trap
Dribble Glass
Itching Powder

Once you complete this collection (which, if it's anything like the St. Patrick's Day collection, you'll be doing many, many times over), you'll be able to turn it in for 200 XP and a Cactus. Even if you didn't need the Cactus, the 200 XP is nothing to scoff at, making this arguably a much more valuable collection than most of those that have come before.

It's presumable that you'll be able to turn in this collection after April itself has passed, but the items themselves will apparently only be available as drops during that time frame. Play fast and play a lot to make sure you earn as many free experience points as you can, while you can.

What do you think of the items in this April Fools Collection? Will you play any virtual pranks on your neighbors? Let us know in the comments.

Cafe World Supreme Cuisine Goals: Everything you need to know

The Supreme Cuisine event has officially launched in Cafe World, allowing you to choose between either Chef Piero's hearty Italian dishes, or classic French chef Raquel. Before you can really get into the meat of this event, which sees you cooking special limited time dishes for one side or the other, you'll need to complete a series of goals in the game. The first goal is called Qualify First, and it appears as though these goals are the same regardless of if you choose Italian or French as your own cuisine type.

Qualify First has three tasks:

Serve 10 French Onion Soup
Serve 5 Tony's Classic Pizza
Get 6 Supreme Cuisine Chef Coats

The Chef Coats can be earned by asking your friends to send you the item via individual gift requests. While you're waiting for them to arrive, you can wait for your dishes to cook. French Onion Soup takes four hours to prepare, while Tony's Classic Pizza is ready after five hours.

Cafe World OK Karaoke Catering Order: Everything you need to know

While you're not busy cooking dishes for the new Supreme Cuisine event in Cafe World, why not save a few stoves for the game's newest catering order: OK Karaoke. This catering order sees you "grabbing the mic" and catering a party at Klub Karaoke, with an animated Karaoke Machine being available as the ultimate prize, along with varying amounts of Cafe Points and coins, as usual.

Meet us behind the break for a full look at this six-part catering mission, which you'll have five days to complete with friends for the big prizes.

Applifier opens game discovery portal on Facebook

Back in the fall of 2010, Applifier became one of the best ways for developers to increase their user numbers via a bar that could be installed on top of a Facebook game, increasing exposure to players of other games. That is, as players enjoyed MMA Pro Fighter, as one example, they would be able to see links to other games that also use the Applifier bar as a way to cross-promote.

Now, though, you need not be relegated to finding new games just through this bar, as a new "Games on Applifier" portal has launched on Facebook itself. This new application must be installed as any other app on your account, and can be used to discover some of the hundreds or even thousands of Facebook games that are otherwise overshadowed by the big names in the industry (ie: Zynga).
The app, which also goes by the name "Play with Friends!" shows you a constantly updating list of apps that are currently being played, along with some of the hottest games in the system. The biggest draw here however seems to be the "For You" section, which has you filling out your gender and your age, only to be shown a list of applications which are recommended for you based on the age groups and genders of other players who play those games. For a 25 year old female, for instance, you might be told to try SuperFun Town, Baking Life or Cooking Mama. A bit stereotypical, yes, but you never know - you might find your next favorite game via this app, when you otherwise would have never known it existed.

To find some of the games that Applifier thinks you should be playing, check out the Play with Friends app on Facebook.

Have you found any great apps via the new Applifier portal? Let us know in the comments.
