Fight List Update

Head's up, Mafia Wars fans - We're updating our fight lists! What this means for you is that you’ll now be put into fight groups with players who are at a closer level with you, so you can be more competitive in fighting. This revamp of the fight lists will mostly affect higher level players. Take a look at the sample of the updated fight groups and see who you’ll be up against:

Italy Regions 6 , 7, 8 -- NEW LOOT PREVIEW?

will appear when Mafia Wars releases Italy Regions 6, 7, and 8.  Rumors are growing that the new Regions may go live any day.
(Some readers believe the items below are from recruiting and special events, so this is not a certainty).  The attack and defense stats on some of these items are incredible...
Items with an (RP) designation supposedly can be purchased in the Marketplace with Reward Points.  But there are so many good items that will be dropping, why waste your RPs?

Green Hornet Loot

It appears that all future Mafia Wars collections and challenges will be part of a corporate promotional tie in.  Hey, Zynga's got shareholders to please.  So we have Dr. Dre's new album, the TV show Southland, and now the Green Hornet movie.

Thought you might be interested Phil - I just cleared a robbing board 9-0 and picked up a pickpocket (that loot that was available to buy in vegas for 2 days a short while ago). Makes sense he should be called that and be a robbing loot item. Shame I already bought 500 so it makes no difference.

Free Gift Links Creators 2: NEW Group

A few weeks back, we introduced the Mafia Wars Free Gift Links Creators Group, a Facebook community page that allowed members to get dozens of Free Gifts a day from members of your Mafia (who were also members of the group) through the use of Tiny URL links and Link-a-Nator.

You could literally get over a hundred Mystery Bags, Armory Parts, special event items, or ANY Free Gift - EACH DAY - by joining the group, adding other group members to your Mafia, and posting and clicking on links.

The Free Gift Link Creators group skyrocketed from 500 to nearly 2,400 members during Christmas week.  Eventually, the Administrators stopped accepting new members.  This made sense: having that many Mafia Wars players in one group made it nearly impossible for some one to find his or her 50, 100, or 200 Mafia members' posts and links on the group's feed.

Fortunately, the Administrators have opened a sequel Facebook page: Mafia Wars Free Gift Link Creators 2.  I encourage those of you who did not get to join the original group to head there.

Mafia Wars Free Gift Link Creators 2 has just over 300 members as I post this.  Let's see if you all can push it over 1,000 this weekend!

ITALY Regions 6 7 8 Property: Nightclub + DJ

Last October, we featured a glimpse into the future of Italy Village properties, highlighting the Nightclub.  The assumption has been that the Nightclub will be available when Mafia Wars releases Italy Regions 6, 7, and 8.  New information from Zynga confirms that theory.

Each Italy Village property requires 4 parts in common (Italian Wood, Marble Slab, Terracotta Tiles, and Stone Columns) - plus a "unique part" - to upgrade.  For example, the Football Stadium required the Football Player, found in NAPOLI, while the Winery required you to stock up on Wine Barrels in PALERMO.

The unique part for the Nightclub will be the DJ.

Mission Loot Finally Pays Off

I've been doing all of the Missions as they come up, just to pass the time while awaiting the arrival of Italy Regions 6, 7 & 8.

Missions are useful because completing them gives you enough extra XP to level up after using all of your Energy and Stamina.  I think of this as the "nerf offset."

Of course, sometimes it take a couple days to complete a Mission (unless you want to spend Reward Points), like when you have to buy two items from your Italy Port - something you can only do once a day.

The Mission Loot, to date, has been mostly items with stats in the high 50s.  This can be a nice addition to a newer player, but won't help you out if you've played for awhile.

But suddenly I found a Mission that not only gave a nice XP bump for leveling purposes, but also a piece of Mission Loot that actually made my top 501.  The job was "Burn Down Wong's Warehouse: Part 3."

Zynga now speaks 'Mafia Wars' in Spanish, French, Italian and German

Sie habe vereist, Narr! That's "You just got iced, fool!" in German (roughly) and finally, Mafia Wars players from around the world can trash talk one another in their native tongue. Isn't the Internet beautiful? Zynga has introduced language support for Spanish, French, Italian and German to Mafia Wars. Taking a cue from the explosive CityVille, opening up the game to more languages could increase the game's player base considerably.

Well, Western languages at least. While I'm no developer, I'd imagine it's far easier to localize a game for Western language audiences than it is for Eastern language players. It all comes down to cultural differences and tolerances. While Europe is far different from the US culturally, its tolerance for violence, language and other cultural nuances are more similar to the US than, say, China. In fact, Zynga has specifically localized both FarmVille and Zynga Poker for Chinese audiences in the past year. With yet another game featuring multilingual support, it wouldn't be a terrible guess to predict this will become a growing trend in Zynga's future game development.

The Dating Game: Will the groovy game show find new life on Facebook? [Interview]

This week, we learned that the classic 1960s game show The Dating Game is going to be revived in the form of a new social game on Facebook as well as other big social networks in the next few months. If you're, ahem, old enough to remember the show, than this game will seem all-too-familiar, right down to the groovy clothing and Flower Power graphics. Oh yeah, and those cheeky questions that always made contestants blush? Those are back too -- the only thing missing is the game's original host, Jim Lange. (For more details, read our Dating Game on Facebook preview.)

We chatted with 3G Studios CEO James Kosta to see what's in store for what's certain to be one of the more unique TV game show spinoffs on Facebook.

What made you decide to revive The Dating Game as a Facebook game? Are you trying to start a dating service for Facebook of sorts? Or, since you can create avatars that might not look like you, is this just a clever way to flirt?

On Facebook and other social sites, most of the lengthy conversations that take place are about relationships. People love to share their views on who their friends should be with, how their friends can improve their relationships and even when their friends have unrealistic expectations. If we're in a relationship, we may want to learn more about what makes our partner happy. The Dating Game is a fun way for friends to learn about each other and explore their preferences and quirks.

Facebook games parody spreads with Cow Clicker Blitz

Famed game scholar and designer (and satirist) Ian Bogost has taken the next logical step with the Cow Clicker franchise and released the Cow Clicker API. According to Bogost, developers can now use the Cow Clicker platform to add "cowclickification" for seamless bovine integration into their mobile applications, web apps and software products. Because every website could use more cows.

Bogost, claiming that cowclickification is the future of branding, says," Leverage the intrinsic motivation of cow clicking to improve user experience and retention! Anything you can click you can cow click. It's free and easy like all the other useless crap you can do online." Just like in the original game, players can earn one click every six hours across their favorite cowclickified (whatever that means) websites, but can earn cow clicks faster by paying up in "Mooney" using Facebook Credits.

To demonstrate the power of the Cow Clicker API, Bogost has launched Cow Clicker Blitz, an obvious goof on Bejeweled Blitz. I guess he just thought it could use more... cows. In fact, clicking the gems in Cow Clicker Blitz ends the one-minute long game instantly. Click cows in rapid succession to increase your score, but watch out for those dastardly gems. But alas, you can only submit your score once every six hours unless you want to pay up in Mooney.

Kotaku reports that this was the natural progression for the trend in clicking virtual cows. "People don't just want one chance to click a cow every six hours," he said. "They want as many opportunities as possible to click a cow every six hours."

What do you think of Bogost's apparent opinion of social games? Is everything really better with more cows? Sound off in the comments. Add Comment.

FarmVille is an example of not-so-social social games, professor says

Another qualified professional, another dismal critical opinion of social games. In what seems to be a dime-a-dozen these days, Coastal Carolina University professor D.E. Wittkower has provided his expert analysis of Facebook to The Sun News. More importantly, both Wittkower and Sun News reporter Isaac Bailey had choice words for Facebook games in particular.

When Bailey eloquently asked, "Why do people spend so much time playing those stupid Facebook games?" (Seriously?) Wittkower replied, "The social games ... which people really make fun of don't have creative interaction with others or particularly interesting game play. Farmville is the exemplar of this not-so-social kind of social game."

The professor and editor of "Facebook and Philosophy" went on to provide Bailey with a news flash that the legitimacy of social gaming has been under fire for some time now. (You know, for the past two years?) "Are these games actually fun, or are they merely addictive?" Wittkower rhetorically questions. "How did we manage to separate those two so thoroughly in a game? It's a kind of brain-hack, using parts of our impulses separated from the goals that those impulses usually serve."

Regardless of your feelings on the issue, critics, designers and gamers alike have been questioning the validity of social gaming nearly since its origin. If you live in the Myrtle Beach, N.C. area, you can pick Wittkower's brain further at his book signing on March 26 at the Books-A-Million at Coastal Grand Mall from 2 to 6 p.m.

Hardcore social games developer Kabam raises $ 30M two combat Zynga

With social gamers predicted to grow to 30 percent of total Internet users by 2012, stories of funding and acquisitions aren't going anywhere. Next in line for some free money is Kabam, developer of strategy Facebook games like Kingdoms of Camelot. The Redwood City, Calif.-based company received $30 million in its third round of funding from investors such as Redpoint Ventures and Intel Capital doing what it does best: make social games for the hardcore gamer, VentureBeat reports.

Sure, the studio of 250 employees only caters to a total of 7 million players--a minuscule number compared to Zynga's over 250 million--but, according to Kabam CEO Kevin Chou, Zynga isn't even its biggest concern. The developer is after companies like Blizzard and EA , Chou feels it has an edge over thanks to the inherently free-to-play model of social games. Games like Blizzard's World of WarCraft have a monthly subscription fee.

"Our vision is to create massively multiplayer social games," said Chou to VentureBeat. "We cater to hardcore gamers who are trying out Facebook and want to play games with their friends on it. This funding round is a validation of our strategy to stand out." Chou believes that Kabam's games will eventually prevail over Zynga's because of its real-time gameplay. Zynga games are considered asynchronous, meaning players don't really play with one another at the same time.

While Kabam's games certainly have hardcore appeal in spades, their barrier to entry is sky high due to massive amounts of preparation for real time combat (one week, to be exact), the meat of social strategy games. According to VentureBeat, Chou promises that more Kabam games are set to launch in 2011. We'll see soon enough if Kabam's hardcore strategy pays off.

What do you think of Kabam's hardcore approach to social games? Do you think real-time gameplay is the future of Facebook gaming? Sound off in the comments. Add Comment.

FarmVille maker Zynga opens New York studio, East Coast: Acquired

If Zynga were a sentient robot bent on global domination, the news of the company's ninth acquisition in just eight months would probably sound more like, "East Coast of United States: Conquered. Bzzt. Calculating probability future conquests. Beep. Please hold." Too bad it's just one really big social games company. he monolithic developer will soon open Zynga New York after it just picked up Area/Code for an unknown sum. Now that Zynga owns studios both in Boston and The Big Apple, it should be safe to consider the East Coast officially acquired.

Best known recently for creating CSI: Crime City with Ubisoft, the Area/Code team will now be known as the Zynga New York team. It will be lead by Demetri Detsaridis and Frank Lantz, the studio's existing general manager and creative director, respectively.

From Area/Code's site: "Our ambition is to contribute in a major way to the evolution of games on social networks, to make games in this space that are deeper and more interesting, games that reward the time and attention of the millions of people who play them with complex, meaningful experiences. We believe our best shot at doing this is working with Zynga, the biggest, most successful company in this space."

Currently, there are no details as to what purpose Zynga New York will serve, but Area/Code's experience with mobile social games and Zynga's recent releases, acquisitions and ambitions are pretty big hints.

"Area/Code has proven itself as a strong and creative innovator with the ability to deliver successful new games on Facebook and for mobile," Zynga says in an official statement. "This addition is truly deepening our bench of world-class talent, with a team that ultimately shares our passion for innovation and success."

What do you think will come of Zynga New York? Where do you predict the company will go next? Sound off in the comments. Add Comment.

Chess Attack on Facebook: Refreshing, but rushed approach to a classic

Classic board games are so easy to create on Facebook. I can't imagine how many renditions of tic-tac-toe, checkers and Mahjong there are on the website much less chess. That's why developer Sweet Robot and publisher Funcom decided to mix things up a bit with Chess Attack on Facebook. By shrinking the playing field from an 8x8 to a 6x6 grid, Sweet Robot has made for a much faster-paced version of the iconic board game. However, games tend to feel too rushed for such a thinker as chess--games will automatically end in a draw if a checkmate isn't reached in enough time.

Find out of Chess Attack makes the right moves after the break.

Aside from the change to the game board, Chess Attack is essentially chess on Facebook, so there's no need to get into all of the rules. Admittedly, it must be tough to make a game of chess interesting in a social game format, but Sweet Robot pulls it off with smooth animations and a slew of cosmetic features. Note the word "cosmetic." Thankfully, the developer didn't get too crazy with paid transactions and limited them to new chess sets and game boards.

FarmVille Sneak Peek: Valentine's Day items in the market

Recently, we started bring you a few Sneak Peeks of items that we think will be coming to FarmVille in the near future, as part of the game's upcoming Valentine's Day theme. Turns out that most of our assumptions were correct, as today FarmVille Pro has stumbled upon some Market Screenshots of these unreleased items, as they will appear in the market, including suspected prices and experience point rewards for purchasing them.

There are items of all kinds being shown off here, including animals, buildings, decorations, and even a couple of trees and a limited edition crop. It appears that there will also be something available for every budget, to make sure there will be plenty of "love" to go around in the game.

Meet us behind the break for a look at these new items.

FrontierVille Fanny's on the Prowl Missions: Everything you need to know

In honor of the upcoming Valentine's Day holiday, Zynga has launched a new series of missions in FrontierVille surrounding the school teacher, Ms. Fanny Wildcat and her search for love out on the great frontier. This mission series contains three new quests to complete, and is called "Fanny's on the Prowl." For some time now, we've been wondering whether or not Fanny would make her feelings for Hank (revealed during the New Years Party even) known, and boy howdy, it looks like she just might.

These missions will have you clearing trees, collecting fire, collecting items with friends, planting crops, and buying decorations, so make sure you've saved up a little bit of everything (wood, coins, food, etc.) before taking them on, to have as little trouble as possible when completing them. As usual, we're here to help you along the way, so meet us behind the break for a full look at these new missions and how to complete them.

FrontierVille Mystery Animal Crate reveals Seals, Swans, and Frogs, oh my!

It's been a while since the FrontierVille market has been updated with anything other than new buildings, but luckily, we have a new item to purchase (if you're willing to shell out some Horseshoes to do so). The new item is a new round of the Mystery Animal Crate, with this crate offering you a chance at winning one of nine animals; three each of Seals, Swans, and Frogs.

Each animal is available in three colors - here's the rundown:

Seals: Brown, White, and Gray
Swans: White, Black, and Pink
Frog: Marigold (yellow), Lilac, and Green

Each individual crate can be purchased from the store for 35 Horseshoes. As usual, it is entirely random as to which animal you'll receive from purchasing a single crate, and if you're hoping to receive more than one of these animals, keep in mind that you may end up with duplicates, before you receive a new animal. I hope you have a lot of Horseshoes to go around!

This Mystery Crate will be available in the store for the next 10 days. Good luck if you try to collect them all!

Which of these three animals are you hoping to receive from the Mystery Crate? And in which colors? Let us know if you succeed in the comments!

Facebook game Evony saves man from fire in home

Comments by Brandy Shaul, Posted Jan 21st 2011 9:40PM Tweet Most of the time, when we have a real-world news story to bring you about Facebook gaming, it deals with something negative - addiction to Facebook games, perhaps. Tonight, though, we have a heart-warming tale of how one particular Facebook game has actually saved a man's life.

51-year-old Robert Chambers, from Spokane Washington, was alone at home on Tuesday, playing Evony on Facebook with a group of online friends. A toaster strudel became lodged in his toaster, causing a fire which spread to the rest of the home. Chambers suffers from muscular dystrophy, and therefore can't move around his home easily. His telephone was out of reach, causing Chambers to call out to those friends he knows on line.

In the Evony game screen he typed "Help me, my house is on fire and I can't get out." He then typed his address, and Evony gamers from both Indiana and Texas proceeded to call the local fire department. Firemen arrived at Chambers' home within a matter of minutes, and he was saved.

Chambers' wife Patricia says she now has a better appreciation for the game, which she used to hate, due to Robert's dedication. "I hated this game because he doesn't pay attention to me or anything else in the house," she said. "Now I've got to bite my tongue because it saved his life quite possibly."

Luckily, this is one news story with a much happier ending than those we've seen in the past. Hopefully it's just the first of many that show the helpful nature of gamers all around the country, and even the world.

CityVille New Fire Station Quest: Everything you need to know

A new quest has been launched in CityVille today called "New Fire Station." As you'd expect, this goal asks you to prepare your city for unexpected tragedy by ensuring that your citizens are safe in the event of a fire. You'll need to complete three tasks to finish this quest, and luckily, they are all pretty simple.

Have a Fire Station in Your City
Collect from the Fire Station
Ask friends for 12 Fire Axes

The most time consuming portion of this quest will likely be the collection of the Fire Axes, which can be done by posting a general wall post to your news feed, asking your friends for help.

As for the Fire Station, if you already have one in your city, don't worry as this mission doesn't ask you to "build" a new one, but rather simply "have" one in your town. If you haven't built one, though, it is available from the Community Buildings section of the store for 30,000 coins. It can be collected from once per day.

Like we said, this mission is actually pretty simple, but good luck to all of those who are trying to finish it!

What do you think of this new quest - how long did it take you to finish it? Let us know in the comments!

CityVille Sneak Peek: First set of RewardVille items revealed

Over the past week, we've been keeping you up-to-date on Zynga's newest "RewardVille" website and promotion. As we've told you in the past, RewardVille will reward players of almost all of Zynga's games with zCoins / zPoints as they continue to play a selection of Zynga's titles on Facebook (including CityVille). These zCoins will be redeemable for prizes (both new and old) in your favorite games, giving incentive to the entire project.

While we've already discovered what the rewards will be for FarmVille players, CityVille Feed has uncovered some of the items that will apparently be coming to CityVille's portion of the rewards program, as they have discovered a new screenshot from the website.

There will apparently be at least eight items made available through RewardVille, all of which are unlocked at a series of increasing level intervals, with these particular items being unlocked from zLevel 40 - 70. Apparently, there are two other pages of rewards, as the screen above says that this is page "3 of 3", but here's the rundown of the items that we do know about:

Jeans Store - 120 zCoins
DVD Rental Store - 120 zCoins
Lamp Store - 110 zCoins
Clock Tower - 130 zCoins
Coastal Rowhouse - 120 zCoins
Downtown Flat - 140 zCoins
Skyrise Heights - 160 zCoins
Stepped Skyscraper - 200 zCoins

As usual, it's anyone's guess as to when these items will be made available to all CityVille players, but keep checking back with us, as we'll make sure you're the first to know - we'll also be back with all of the details on how to level up in RewardVille, and what other prizes will be made available in your other favorite Zynga games.

FarmVille Sneak Peek: New Modern Theme coming soon?

Back in May of 2010, Zynga launched a short Modern Theme of limited edition items in FarmVille. At the time, the items released contained straight lines and simplistic and (of course) modern designs that may or may not have fit in with any particular user's farm - it was up to them to make it fit with the "country" style of the game.

While the event has long since expired, and the items basically unheard of since, it seems as though Zynga might not be ready to forever say goodbye to the theme of "modern" in the game, as we've come across a solitary unreleased image this morning - the image of a new Modern Home. Of course, with the release of the first Modern Home back in May, there's a high probability that Zynga will rename this item into something more original, but it will definitely be interesting to see if this was just a one-off item, that the FarmVille team had no interest in developing further, or whether this will be the first of many "Modern Theme 2" items that we'll eventually see in the game.

As usual, there's no guarantee that this item will actually launch in the game, and any details about its pricing or availability are as-of-now unknown, so keep that in mind.

What do you think of this "Modern Home?" Would you like to see the modern theme make a comeback in FarmVille? Let us know in the comments.

Gain your rightful place in the yearbook with Liberty High on Facebook

Most of us (those out of high school, anyway) probably remember high school as one of two things - either the worst time of our lives, or the best. If you are a member of the former group, a Facebook game called Liberty High has its sites set on you. Liberty High can be most-easily described as a semi-clone of Mafia Wars, and the game will allow you to relive your high school days (albeit virtually) in order to earn a better spot in the yearbook, and the adoration of all of your classmates.

Gameplay is mostly text-based, although you are allowed to create a real avatar for yourself (hair, eye color, clothing options, and so on). Your character will level up over time, earning more Energy, Confidence points, and Health points, and you'll be able to use those points in a variety of activities, like completing school missions (separated into Academics, Art, Athletics and Fun categories), flirting with the school's cutest boys, and having face-offs with your rivals.

All of these elements have comparisons to activities that you can complete in Mafia Wars, so if you're at all familiar with Zynga's crime-themed game, you'll get along just fine here, regardless of the variance in themes. For a complete look at everything Liberty High has to offer, meet us behind the break.

FrontierVille Sneak Peek: Possible RewardVille items revealed

Earlier today, we brought you a sneak peek of a few of the CityVille prizes that will apparently be available to users via RewardVille, Zynga's new rewards program that offers players points that can be redeemed for prizes, just for being a loyal player of their games. Now, FrontierVille Legend has come up with an interesting theory - a few of the items that we saw as unreleased items way back in December (items that have not been released in the game yet) are likely FrontierVille's RewardVille rewards.

Apparently, these items have been marked as "zPoints" by Zynga, with zPoints being the original name for zCoins, which is now the official currency of the RewardVille program. There are five items that are believed to be rewards for FrontierVille, although nothing is certain at this point. They are:

Varmint Targets
Spittoon
Sad Lil' Tree
Pink Tree
Duck Pinwheel

It's interesting to see Christmas items included in this set, but perhaps this will be FrontierVille's way of celebrating the holiday all-year-round. Regardless, we'll be sure to give you a complete look at which items do finally make it into RewardVille when the program goes live for all FrontierVille players in the apparently near future.

What do you think of these possible RewardVille rewards? How long would you be willing to play other Zynga games just to be able to afford these items in FrontierVille? Let us know in the comments.

FrontierVille: Snowy Trees now appearing on Homesteads

Just as we had a transition from lush, green trees in summer to red and yellow trees for fall in FrontierVille, it looks like Zynga has finally transitioned the game fully into winter, as Snowy Trees have now started appearing on users' Homesteads.

This appears to be a slow rollout, as most users on the FrontierVille forums are reporting that they either A) haven't received snowy trees at all, or B) only one or two of their completely new trees have grown in to be snowy trees.

Meanwhile users like wngschic have posted screenshots of an entire Homestead's worth of snow covered pines and oaks. These trees are only different visually - they still function the same, are capable of bringing out bears, and will reward wood when chopped down - they just happen to be either leafless, in the case of the Oak, or covered in snow, as it is with the Pines.

New Mission Feature

We’re very excited to unveil our biggest feature yet. Get ready to explore cities and content in Mafia Wars with in-game characters that guide you on Missions.

Missions are special tasks that players complete to gain rewards. Each Mission starts with an in-game character explaining what objectives you need to accomplish (i.e. do specific jobs, fight a special character, etc.) as you navigate your way through a city.

Mafia Wars - Atlantic City Chapter 2

In my earlier post about Mafia Wars: Atlantic City (Chapter 1), I griped about the boring nature of the jobs and the low XP:Energy ratio in Atlantic City (about 1.3 to 1.5).

One reader commented that, if you've finished all the other cities, you might as well complete Atlantic City's other chapter, since there are 24 Skill Points to earn there (6 jobs, 4 levels). And I thought, that's a great point. So I plowed headlong into Atlantic City -Chapter 2.

Governor's Run and Private Zoo - PREVIEW

Mafia Wars is unveiling two new features: a Social Event (think along the lines of the Thanksgiving Dinner) and - since you've been able to build Vehicles, Weapons, and Armor - a fourth Property in New York City where you can build(?)... you guessed it... ANIMALS.

Animals?!?!?

Foo Fighter vs. Ballista Missile Launcher: The Great Debate

Since mid-October, when Mafia Wars lifted the trade embargo off the high-end Vegas loot, four items emerged as the cream of the Vegas crop:

Foo Fighter (37A/60D),
Ballista Missile Launcher (62A/15D)
Reinhardt & Otto (57A/36D)
Bighorn (26A/64D)

The Engine and The Patriot

The Engine is needed to build a "Limited Time" Vehicle that popped up in the Chop Shop -- all the way on the left end (the suggestion above to "be on the lookout" makes sense since you usually see new Chop Shop items at the RIGHT end of the row...)

It's called the Patriot and you'll want as many of them as you can get while they're around. With its 53A/68D stats, it is one of the few collectible Vehicles that beats the Foo Fighter on Defense. And you get two Defense stat points for each one you build.

ALL FIVE Private Zoo Upgrade Gift Links

The new Private Zoo property is all the rage this week. The difficulty in upgrading it is that your Free Gift window only has 2 of the 5 upgrade parts. Thus, you end up with 23 Bird Cages, 21 Feeding Troughs, but no Aquariums, Big Cages, or Terrariums - making it harder to get complete upgrade sets (one of each part).

And you'll need 71 Private Zoo upgrade SETS - 355 pieces - to fully upgrade your property to its current highest level. What to do?

The links below let you send your Mafia EACH of the five Private Zoo upgrade parts. And then your Mafia can send the same part back to you. This way, you're not limited by your own Free Gift window to sending - and receiving back - a certain part.

These links work like the popular Terracotta Tile/Stone Column links and Italian Hardwood/Marble Slab links - they will send you into Mafia Wars to a screen where you can send the chosen Private Zoo upgrade to whatever Mafia members you select:

I know you're not breaking out the champagne for 1 , but every bit helps. Didn't see this one on the Zynga board, but it appears to work:

Farewell to Treasure Isle

I'd meant to report on this sad Mafia Wars development before it became reality... but you know how reality is sometimes too hard to deal with... even in a computer game?

Hustlin' Wit Dre

Mafia Wars has a new social event up tonight called . You're familiar with these events, where you collect three items and get rewards at three tiers, and eventually a grand prize, and can do the event three times.

If this doesn't sound familiar, you either have a life or are new to Mafia Wars. Think of the recent Cake Jailbreak and Serial Assassins events. This is the same deal. You've probably missed collecting bees and cupcakes, so luckily we have another social event before you go into withdrawal.

Other than an interesting Dr. Dre video previewing a new song, the setup is the same as the other social events. These have come up so frequently lately that I bet I can give readers all the information necessary JUST by posting pictures. So I'm going to try:

Discrimination at the Zoo?

Come on, Mafia Wars - get into the 21st century already.   Discrimination in any form is so.... yesterday.

So why is there discrimination at the Private Zoo?

Italy Loot Can Be Gifted/Traded (to the Needy)

Not sure when this started, but in reviewing the new Mafia Wars Inventory Page, I noticed the "gifting" symbol next to some drop Loot from... ITALY!

Nothing huge - you can't trade your Meadow Vipers or Corpo Armaturas yet - but here's what you CAN trade:

No Crime Like The Present

Were you a VERY good boy or girl this year?  If so - and if you asked Santa for the mother of all challenges, combining every annoying aspect of Mafia Wars into one event strategy and resolve, it looks like your wish was granted!

Secure Rudolph Operation: the Jackal ATV

The only Rare Rewards you can trade/gift/Wish List from Operations - besides the Mission Collection items - are the Grim Reaper, Coyote, Z17 Micro, and Grip Gloves.

Ummm...December 21, 2010 called...it wants its outdated Mafia Wars trivia back!  Ummm...1997 called...it wants its sarcastic quip back!

FrontierVille and Cafe World Promos: NEW Loot Items

Your Chop Shop, Weapons Depot, Armory, and Private Zoo each now have two new items - one as part of the FrontierVille promo, the other from Cafe Word.  You can build one per day unless you want to spend Reward Points to speed up the clock.

The key to building each Weapon or Vehicle or Armor or Animal is getting a special part from the Zynga game associated with that particular item.   You don't need to play BOTH Frontierville and Cafe World to make an item, but you will if you want to make all 8.

For the 4 FrontierVille items, you need a Beaver Pelt... available by playing another Zynga game that I don't want to get addicted to, for fear of divorce, poverty, and growing old in front of a computer screen FrontierVille.

For Cafe World, you need a Doctored Invoice, which can be found in bills that lawyers send their clients Cafe World.

The items will boost your Mafia Defense stats, and each come with a separate stat boost.  Here's what's available in each Mafia Wars Property:

How to Protect Your Christmas Tree

If you're like me, you've been getting an error message when you try to add more Gift Protectors for the No Crime Like the Present event...

Atlantic City: Chapter 3

This seems like a well-thought out name by Zynga because Atlantic City is, after all, in the southern half of New Jersey along with over 200 other towns in the 9  counties comprising "South Jersey"... and thus makes as much sense as using "South Europe" for the title of Italy: Region 6, when it finally debuts in May 2013.

Steal the Ball Operation: New Years Resolution

Following on the heels of the Christmas-themed Secure Rudolph Operation, which drops the trade-able Jackal ATV once every 320 tries on occasion, Mafia Wars recently unveiled
something I remember Zynga using in December 2009 the New Year's themed Steal the Ball Operation which I'm sure New Yorkers appreciated after the May 2010 bombing attempt in Times Square is fun.

Operations - How to Join 200 or More EVERY DAY

Mafia Wars Operations feature some of the best Attack and Defense items in the game, and - in six instances - let you Wish List, gift, and trade top-tier Operations Loot.   The recent Steal the Ball Operation and Secure Rudolph Operation brought two more great items into the game.  If only there were a way to get to the point already join more Operations...

FarmVille Winter Wonderland Building: Bundle up and head into the new Igloo

Brrrrr. It's cold in here. You'd think the walls were made of ice or something. Oh wait... in the case of FarmVille's newest Winter Wonderland building, the Igloo, they are made of ice! The new Igloo is a cute, average sized building item that you can purchase for Farm Cash as a decorative building for your farm. Unfortunately, you can't actually walk inside it - darn!

The Igloo can be purchased for 16 Farm Cash, and can be sold for 8,000 coins, should you change your mind about keeping it once the winter season ends. You'll receive 1600 experience points as a bonus for purchasing the Igloo. While 16 Farm Cash might seem like a high price, this is actually one of the most affordable buildings we've seen released in the game in some time, at least where premium, or Farm Cash only, items are concerned. That being the case, we certainly couldn't blame you if you wanted to pick this one up because of its slightly lower price.

The Igloo will remain in the game for the next 13 days, at which point it will disappear from the store, likely not to be seen again (at least not until Zynga potentially decides to re-release the Igloo next year once winter comes around).

Check out the rest of our Holiday 2010 coverage right here.

What do you think of the Winter Wonderland Igloo? Will you purchase it to make your farm look more like the arctic? Let us know in the comments!

CityVille beats FarmVille's best numbers, shatters and sets records

It looks like Zynga and the CityVille team have received a New Year's gift now, too. (In fact, CityVille doesn't seem to need an occasion anymore.) TechCrunch reports that CityVille has become the biggest social game to ever grace Facebook, breaking FarmVille's record-setting peak of nearly 83.8 million monthly players in March 2010 with 84.2 million monthly players. Zynga's most recent social-gaming juggernaut has been shattering records since it launched early in Dec. 2010, but this is a first for both CityVille and the Facebook game genre altogether.

We've all said that the growth has to plateau at some point, but continues surging upward, blowing away our expectations and doubts without much more than a few stutters, according to a chart provided by Inside Social Games (ISG). It's ISG that also predicts CityVille to reach 125 million players at some point in 2011. Well, if the game keeps soaring at this rate of almost two million new monthly players daily, it's only a matter of time before CityVille at least reaches 100 million. Either way, CityVille is already the most popular social game to date in the genre's infantile lifespan. That is until Zynga launches something else, of course.

When do you think CityVille will stop growing? At 100 million players, 125 million players or even more than that? Sound off in the comments. Add Comment.

Top 25 Facebook Games - January 2011

Comments by Libe Goad, Posted Jan 3rd 2011 1:00PM Tweet Inside Social Games has released the top 25 Facebook games for January and -- to no surprise -- Zynga's new darling CityVille has gone straight to the top of the charts, overtaking FarmVille, which until recently, seemed darn near impossible. The real question is how long CityVille will stay at the top or if this number is inflated due to extra promotion and the 'new'ness of it all.

Other newcomers to January's Top 25 list include PopCap's Zuma Blitz, which is a timed version of the classic PC game, and CrowdStar's uber girly game, It Girl, which grew 1.2 million last month.

Little War on Facebook: Stone Age game at a Stone Age pace

If there is one niche that Facebook games have yet to hit, it might very well be the Stone Age. Thanks to Chinese social game developer Five Minutes, that's no longer an issue with Little War. Set in prehistoric times, Little War puts you in the role of chieftain, overseeing a fledgling tribe as they kill, expand and cultivate their way to caveman supremacy. Drawing obvious similarities from established warfare and city-building games like My Empire, Little War brings a lot to the table in presentation as one the most visually appealing Facebook games out there. Unfortunately, the game moves at a fossilized snail's pace, forcing players to wait for sometimes days before seeing the fleeting moments of combat.

Find more detailed impressions of Little War after the break.

Trial Madness 2 on Facebook is addictive, antisocial motocross

Alright, so it's not exactly a social game in the traditional sense. But Trial Madness 2 by Spanish developer Social Point is just plain fun. Sure, you can add your friends and compare times with them--not to mention to global leader boards. And of course you can create a custom player profile and avatar that will display your highest score and currency. But none of this is the main draw of Trial Madness 2.

It's the gameplay.

And while gameplay alone doesn't seem to get social games very far these days, Trial Madness 2 certainly brings it in spades. Not to mention plenty of competition. Check behind the break for our detailed impressions of Trial Madness 2.

Santa Claw: Use Facebook Connect to play a claw machine from home

Well, at this point it's more like, "Wait in line to play a real claw machine from home," but it's awesome nonetheless. Mashable reports that Real Art Design, a Chicago-based design firm, have created a gigantic claw machine using one ton of steel, 700 feet and wire and 1.5 wheelchairs to be played with solely online. That's right, just log in using your Facebook account, Twitter handle or e-mail address and... wait for a really long time to play. As you can imagine, word of this intriguing creation has spread like wildfire--so much so that we can't even fit in the line at the moment.

The idea behind the creation is to give away the gifts that Santa had leftover from this past Christmas. That is, of course, if you manage to get in line before all the presents are gone. If you do somehow squeeze in and, through some mystical alignment of whatever celestial bodies symbolize luck, win a prize, then Real Art Design will send that exact present directly to your house. Who knows what could be inside, but we sure hope Santa dropped a MacBook somewhere along the way.

Zuma Blitz player scores over 2 million in single session

Comments by Joe Osborne, Posted Jan 3rd 2011 5:55PM Tweet
One Zuma Blitz player has achieved what many thought might be the impossible: over 2 million points in a single play session. We've watched the video multiple times and still have trouble figuring out just how YouTube user Causaelity made it happen. All we can say is that it took incredible speed, timing and a whole lot of gap shots and Time Balls. That explosive Hot Frog must have been helpful too.

Well, after all the Time Balls smashed this player had over two minutes to reach that score. Not to mention that this apparent Zuma Blitz master is a Level 80 Battle Frog. Sadly, if the high score indicator speaks the truth, this isn't even close to his best. It's about time we all get our Zuma on if we want to even come close to a score like this. (And to think I was proud of breaking 100,000.) Excellent ball busting, Causaelity!

What's your highest score in Zuma Blitz? What are your personal tips for maximizing your score in the game? Please share in the comments. (Seriously, my Zuma game is in dire need.) Add Comment.

FarmVille behind bars: Inmates use smuggled phones to tend virtual crops

Just because you're locked up behind bars doesn't mean you need to abandon your virtual farm. According to this New York Times article, smuggled smartphones are starting to become a prison cliche, much like finding a homemade shiv hidden in a mattress. These contraband phones are being used for everything from directing criminal activities outside prison to ... playing FarmVille on Facebook.
"Almost everybody has a phone," said Mike, 33, an inmate at Smith State Prison in Georgia who, like other prisoners interviewed for this article, asked that his full name not be used for fear of retaliation. "Almost every phone is a smartphone. Almost everybody with a smartphone has a Facebook."Even though the smartphones are banned from prison systems (if you're found in possession of one, it can lead to additional criminal charges or affect your parole) they still manage to make their way into inmate's hands. The NYT article says that In California last year, officers discovered around 9,000 contraband cell phones. Guards, visitors and inmates smuggle in the phones and monthly payments range from $300 to $1,000, which are generally paid by convict's relatives.

There was no percentage on just how many cons use their smartphones to play games on Facebook, but it looks like FarmVille-maker Zynga might have a burgeoning new fan base on its hands.

FarmVille Sneak Peek: Duck Pond coming soon?

In one of the more exciting FarmVille Sneak Peeks that we've been able to bring you, it looks like the next animal storage "building" that will be released in the game will be one for our friends the Ducks. We've come across an unreleased image of what the interior of the new Duck Pond building might look like.

As usual, it looks like the Duck Pond will be a "buildable" item, and that we might need four items in total to build it. Could this mean that we'll see an exclusive Duck Pond building ingredient - perhaps something like a "Bucket of Water" - that must be collected in addition to Bricks, Wooden Boards, and Nails? All of that, of course is still up in the air, but one thing has been revealed - the Duck Pond will apparently allow users to feature five of their ducks from their Duck Pond at the bottom of the menu.

The most likely reason for this will be that all of the Ducks you have in your Duck Pond won't be visible, but you'll be able to choose the five ducks that you most like that you'd want to see, perhaps even swimming in the water of the Pond.

We'll be sure to bring you more details about this unreleased feature as they become available, but for now, remember that there is no guarantee that we'll actually see the Duck Pond in the game. Sure, it would be surprising if it didn't launch, but stranger things have happened.

What do you think of having a Duck Pond in FarmVille? What other animal storage buildings would you like to see released in the game? Let us know in the comments.

FarmVille Pigpen Expansion: Everything you need to know plus links

Bring on the slop, farmers, because Zynga will soon allow you to expand your Pigpens in FarmVille. Thanks to our friends over at FarmVille Freak, we have all the information and tools you'll need to get that Pigpen even bigger (and even sloppier) as soon as possible. Luckily, it's pretty simple albeit potentially tedious. You'll need to acquire 12 of these three items from friends in good old "BegVille" style:

12 Wooden Boards 12 Bricks 12 Nails
Get all 36 items and, just like that, your Pigpen will be able to hold twice as many Pigs as before at 40 Pigs. After about 20 minutes on the good old calculator, I deduced that this should... double your chance of finding precious Truffles. What, does it look like I went to college for mathematics? Anyway, if you're having trouble finding any of these three items in your Free Gifts page, here are some links that should take you straight there:

FrontierVille Arts and Crafts: Awesome 3D avatar, Sugar Glider models

Some pioneers express their love (or temporary disdain) for FrontierVille through words on various message boards, through comments right here on the site or even through skillful, hilarious Photoshop edits. But FrontierVille forum member SisLayla has articulated her adoration for the homestead through clay. In her spare time, SisLayla has been working on bringing her FrontierVille avatar into the real world through the art of clay sculpture and the results are pretty amazing.

According to her original forum post, she used solely polymer clay. FrontierVille Info reports that she later created a Suger Glider (pictured below) from the same material. You know, the one that's still available from the in-game Mystery Animal Crate until Jan. 6? Both are impressive creations and we can't wait to see what she comes up with next. In the meantime, why not send any social game-inspired artwork you find or have made yourself to us at editors

FrontierVille's Giant Pink Tree goes missing, Zynga is on the case

There have been many recent complaints on the FrontierVille forums that the Giant Pink Tree decoration from the Toy Factory has gone missing. A four-page long forum thread has sprouted as a result of the issue, which according to forum moderator Miss Marme, has already been reported to Zynga.

The item, which certainly makes a statement, costs 250 Toys from the Toy Factory. If you've been keeping up with recent events on the homestead, you'll know that collecting 250 Toys is no easy feat and the Giant Pink Tree is the second most expensive present available inside the Toy Factory. According to FrontierVille Info, many players are receiving this message upon logging into the game at the top of the screen, "We appreciate your patience while we work to resolve an issue where Pink Christmas Trees are temporarily missing." It's unsure what type of solution Zynga is cooking up for this little mishap, but let's hope it involves either bringing the Giant Pink Tree back or a pretty hefty refund.

Facebook games partnerships gig given to former LiveJournal CEO

Sean Ryan (pictured), who previously worked for News Corp. creating an online games division, is now director of games partnerships at Facebook, VentureBeat reports. The position had been open since August before the decision was finally made to take Ryan on, who also previously served as CEO for Meez, a virtual world for teenagers and LiveJournal, a once popular blogging service before the turn of the decade.

Now, don't get too excited--Facebook will not be making its own games anytime soon if ever. Ryan will purely foster the social network's relationships with developers like Zynga, Playdom, Playfish and more. In other words, it's this guy's job to keep dudes like Zynga CEO Mark Pincus peachy keen.

This is a smart move by Facebook, which hasn't had a stellar track record of catering both to gamers and non-gamers alike. Though, the company did recently create a new development division solely for improving the gaming experience on the site. It seems as if Facebook is finally serious about the half of its users that enjoy these games, which aren't going away anytime soon.

Starz sending Spartacus Facebook game into the arena this month

Forget Mafia Wars, real warriors fight with sword and shield in hand, nothing but a loin cloth protecting their bodies. No? Well, Starz seems to think so as the network will soon launch a Facebook game surrounding its hit series, Spartacus. Fox News reports that the game, officially titled Spartacus: Gods of the Arena and published by 6waves (the same folks working on that mysterious Kobe Bryant game), will be available come Jan. 20. Just in time for the show's six-episode mini-series coming Jan. 21, this will be one of the first TV shows to get its own social game, according to Fox News. Well, unless you count that weird soap opera game in the U.K.

"Given its powerful characters and larger-than-life story lines, few television properties have as much potential for innovative social game play as does 'Spartacus," Marc DeBevoise, SVP of digital media and business development strategy for Starz Media, told Fox News. "We are excited to make our social media gaming debut and be one of the early networks to bring a branded TV property to the social gaming universe."

Unsurprisingly, the game will be similar to Mafia Wars in that it will allow players to run their own gladiator school and partake in Roman role play, according to Fox News. We almost don't want to know what that last part means. Stay tuned for a preview when the game finally launches sometime this month, because now we just gotta' know what this "Roman role play" nonsense is all about.

Would you play a Spartacus social game? What TV show do you think should get its own Facebook game? Sound off in the comments. Add Comment.

CityVille Franchise update patches issue with deleting HQ

You can lift your fingers from that big red button now, mayors. Zynga introduced a small update to CityVille yesterday that, when opting to delete a Franchise Headquarters, causes a pop up confirmation message to appear. The message, pictured above, asks players to confirm whether they would like the HQ to be sent to their inventory, which is somewhat old news.

Before this change, all deleting a Franchise HQ did was send it to your inventory. This change, well, informs you of that, giving you a chance to stop it. This must have been a pretty major issue to warrant what appears to be a reactive update. This change comes after several recent tweaks to the game's interface, optimizing several aspects of gameplay that before took several actions to perform. Considering the game is little more than a month old, we doubt this marks the end of game fixes and changes.

Wishful Features: A FrontierVille animations toggle button

Ever visit that one Neighbor in FrontierVille who happens to be somewhat of an overachiever? You know who I'm talking about. Almost everyone has that one friend who is Level 150 with the biggest homestead available, every animated decoration out there and his legion of Chickens (see above) for all to see. Did I say "for all to see?" Sorry, what I meant to say was, "for all to cringe in horror as their browsers freeze and processors melt through the surface of their four-year-old laptops."

At least the first part of that vision should be familiar with a good lot of you. And it isn't just the sharp visuals in FrontierVille that are to blame. It's the animations. If you haven't noticed, just about every animal, building and holiday item slash decoration has an animation attached. Sure, most animations are simple one-second-long loops, but multiply that by the amount of items that litter most veteran players' homesteads and it's enough to send the average computer into hiding.

Sure, that Graphics Quality toggle helps a bit, but for those who have yet to--bear with me here--upgrade their primary Facebook-gaming machine in the past few years, Flash-based games (i.e. almost all Facebook games) are going to punish the average computer. It might sound ridiculous that we're talking about computer upgrades on Games.com, but rest assured this is all coming from someone who easily falls into the camp of "average computer" face first with a three-year-old HP Pavilion laptop. I will be the first to tell you that computers do not age like sharp cheese or fine wine, but more like mold on bread or Keith Richards.

With 250 million players, it should be safe to assume that the majority of social gamers are probably in the same boat. So, Zynga, why not add a similar option to the Graphics Quality toggle in FrontierVille? Make it so that players with less-than-favorable computing situations can actually pay their more technologically advanced friends a visit every once in a while. If players are already making liberal use of the Graphics Quality toggle in nearly every game they play (at least I need to), then turning off a few idle character animations isn't going to make the visual FrontierVille experience that much worse. Your fellow pioneers seem to agree.

Do you play FrontierVille on a computer that's older than two years? If so, would you like to see an option like this be added to the game? Sound off in the comments. Add Comment.

Cafe World Treats for Kids Catering Order: Everything you need to know

Zynga has teamed up with Save the Children, an organization working to stop childhood hunger, for their latest Catering Order in Cafe World. The Catering Order is called "Treats for Kids," and while you can complete the order without actually taking part in any sort of charity or donation, the game will provide you with an opportunity to donate to cause, along with offering you some pretty nice incentive to do so.

The Catering Order can be found as the very last order currently available in your "Catering Business" Menu. There are five tasks that need to be completed therein (cooking three dishes, and collecting two items), and you'll have three days to complete the order once you start in order to receive the 3-star prize, which includes unlocking access to a brand new recipe.
